Graduation Information

NEW Graduation requirements for the class of 2021 and beyond.

First Thing's First.....what do you need to graduate?

Graduation Requirements

The Jeffco Board of Education has established policy a number of years ago stating that students are required to earn 23 credits in specific academic areas in order to graduate from a Jeffco high school.  The State of Colorado has recently added that students graduating in the year 2021 and beyond must demonstrate college and career readiness in one of a number of ways, including through standardized testing, earning college credit while in high school, earning an industry certificate, or in some other type of demonstration of skill in English and Math.  You will find some initial information about the opportunities that students at SLHS will have to meet the competency requirement through included links.  Please keep in mind that each student needs to meet the competency requirement only once for English and once for Math, and they can mix-and-match how they meet these two competencies.

Testing

There are a couple of testing opportunities that students will have to achieve the competency.  Two ways are the Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) exams in some English and Math classes.  Not all students take these classes, but all students in Colorado are required to take the SAT in April of their junior year.  Students can meet the competency requirement by scoring at least 470 on the English portion and 500 on the Math portion of the test.

Concurrent Enrollment Classes

Students can take classes at SLHS that also earn them college credit through Red Rocks Community College or the University of Colorado, Denver.  Specific courses in English and Math can meet the competency with a grade of C or better.  See our 2019-20 registration guide on the SLHS Counseling web-page for more information about concurrent enrollment opportunities.

Capstone Project

A capstone project is a broad-reaching, interest-based project that serves as a culminating experience for students.  Gators currently do a capstone project through senior English classes and through the IB Internal Assessments.  We are working to make minor adjustments to what we already do to accommodate the competency requirement for both English and Math.  Students will learn more about this as they approach their senior year.
